Potluck Recipe

Seven-Layer Bars

Al Sicherman of the Star-Tribune came up with these by combining the
recipes for several popular bars. He calls them "Hello Magic Seven Layer
Dolly Bars". They are easy to make, and are very sweet, like baklava,
only better (in one word: chocolate).

About 70 servings, so consider making half a recipe.

  • 2 sticks (1 c.) butter or margarine
  • 3 c. graham cracker crumbs (about 48 squares)
  • 12 oz. (2 c.) semisweet chocolate chips
  • 12 oz. (2 c.) butterscotch chips
  • 8 oz. (1-1/2 c.) flaked or shredded coconut
  • 2 (14 oz.) cans sweetened condensed milk
  • 8 oz (2 c.) chopped nuts (such as pecan or walnut)

Place the butter in a 9" by 13" pan and
put the pan in the oven. Preheat oven to 350º.

As soon as the butter melts, sprinkle the graham cracker
crumbs over the bottom of the pan. Do not stir.

Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the surface.
Then sprinkle the butterscotch chips, followed by
the coconut. Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly
over the coconut. Don't try to spread it once it's poured.
Finally, sprinkle the nuts over all.

Bake 25 to 30 minutes. Let the bars cool completely and
firm up before cutting into bars — otherwise you have
a gooey mess.

These bars actually improve with age, so consider making them
a day or more ahead.
